Help Prevent Homelessness

As the weather begins to turn in most of our cities, we're reminded how important it is to have a warm place to call home. For thousands of Americans, this essential human need would go entirely unmet if it weren't for the ceaseless effort of anti-poverty and anti-homelessness organizations like the three below. When deciding which organizations to support for a quarter, the GiveForward team considers how each organization does its part to: 1) provide immediate relief for a problem or issue, 2) provide a sustainable or long-term solution to the problem, and 3) create an innovative approach to relieving the issue. For the months of November, December, and January, the GiveForward Community Fund will be focused on helping organizations that prevent homelessness in the following ways.

The Recipients This Quarter

Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation

Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation

The Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation is committed to helping alleviate hunger in metropolitan Chicago. Through their efforts, 150,000 Chicagoans receive over 3 million meals each year. Beyond serving meals, CAHF provides job training for underemployed and welfare-to-work members of our community. CAHF is also committed to teaching and providing healthy meals to urban youth whose lack of nutritional options can lead to problems with obesity and diabetes. GiveForward chose CAHF to be one of the three organizations preventing homelessness because of their commitment to provide healthy food for Chicago's hungry. CAHF is an organization that meets the immediate needs of Chicago's soup kitchens, food banks, and emergency shelters. Without organizations like CAHF, thousands of Chicagoans would go hungry each day. Meeting this basic human need, allows impoverished citizens to focus on other things like finding work and a permanent home.

Teen Living Programs

Teen Living Programs

According to a study done in Colorado, nearly 50% of homeless adults were homeless as teenagers. This fact alone proves that if we want to prevent homelessness, we as a society should be paying more attention to at risk teens. Teen Living Programs (TLP) provides young people in Chicago with a way out of homelessness by offering safe and stable homes, helping teens finish school and find work, and teaching them the necessary skills to become productive and responsible citizens. GiveForward selected TLP to be a recipient of this quarter's donations because we believe that helping teens get on the right track as they enter adulthood is one of the best ways to prevent the cyclical poverty that can lead to homelessness.

StreetWise

StreetWise

StreetWise is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to empower men and women who currently are, or at risk of becoming homeless. StreetWise accomplishes this mission by publishing a magazine which is sold to these men and women (whom they refer to as "vendors"), and they in turn sell it on the street for a profit. The publication is not a hand-out, but rather an opportunity for these vendors to become financially self-sufficient through gainful employment. The GiveForward Team is excited to support Streetwise for several reasons. First, we believe that giving individuals the ability to earn a salary provides self esteem and self worth to a portion of society humbled by poverty. Second, we think that informing young people about what Streetwise really is will change the way they look at the vendors on our corners. And finally, we are moved by the passion and creative problem solving of this organization that gave Chicago's homeless a way to improve their lives a little each day.
